PORTLAND, Ore. – United Soccer Leagues announced Thursday the Premier Development League (PDL) Team of the Week for Week 10 with Timbers U-23s forward Mark Sherrod given honorable mention for his game-winning-goal against Washington Crossfire on July 6.
Sherrod’s goal handed the Timbers U-23s a 1-0 win at Doc Harris Stadium in Camas, Wash. and secured a third postseason appearance for the team since it began play in 2009.
Sherrod scored the game-winner in the 69th minute, applying a clinical headed finish to midfielder Nicholas Hammer’s well-driven cross for his 10th goal of the season. Sherrod is the third Timbers U-23s player in team history to record 10 or more goals in a season, joining Brent Richards (2010) and Ryan Youngblood (2009) in accomplishing the feat.
Sherrod’s inclusion on the PDL’s Team of the Week honorable mention list marks the second straight week the Timbers U-23s have had at least one player named to the honorable mention list; forward Erik Hurtado and defender Chris Harms were given PDL Team of the Week honorable mention in Week 9.
The Portland Timbers U-23s begin postseason play on Sunday when they play host to the Kitsap Pumas in the divisional round of the Premier Development League (PDL) playoffs at Gladstone High School in Gladstone, Ore. at 6:30 p.m. (Pacific).
