The Portland Timbers U15 Academy team was welcomed by City of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and the Portland City Council Wednesday at City Hall in honor of the team’s 2022 Generation adidas Cup Championship won last month in Texas.
It was the Council’s first in-person meeting in over two years due to the pandemic and council members were thrilled to kick off, so to speak, the day’s agenda with the U15 team in attendance.
“I'm just so grateful that you all represent our city so well," said City Commissioner Dan Ryan. "This is a prideful moment for the City of Portland.
"I think it's important to notice that you are our first moment live after two years of being virtual. So thanks for welcoming us back. It's great that the youth are here to do that. Congratulations.”
The U15s defeated La Liga giants Valencia CF U15s 2-0 in the Generation adidas Cup final on April 16 becoming the first MLS team to win the tournament. Timbers forward Noah Santos was named the tournament MVP while goalkeeper Keenan VanPelt earned the Top Goalie Award. The pair were also joined by midfielder Emiliano Zamudio on MLSsoccer.com’s tournament Best XI.
