U.S. OPEN CUP MATCH RECAP | Seattle Sounders FC 2, Portland Timbers 1

TUKWILA, Wash. â€“ The Portland Timbers lost 2-1 to Seattle Sounders FC in a closely contested Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fourth round match Tuesday evening at Starfire Sports Stadium.

Seattle's Aaron Kovar scored early for Sounders FC while Timbers forward Augustine Williams–one of 11 players signed to short-term contracts from T2 and one of five in the Portland starting XI–tied it up for Portland late in the first half. However, it was a second half penalty kick conversion from Seattle's Zach Mathers that proved to be the deciding goal of the match.

Match Moments

3' - GOAL (SEA) - The Sounders drew first blood when a cross from Seattle's Nouhou Tolo on the left side found midfielder Aaron Kovar in front of the Timbers net. Kovar then placed it past Portland goalkeeper Jeff Attinella for a 1-0 Sounders lead.

34' - CHANCE (POR) - Timbers midfielder Ben Zemanski curled in a dangerous free kick from just outside the box that forced a leaping punch away from Seattle goalkeeper Tyler Miller.

38' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers found an equalizer near the end of the first half off a corner kick. Zemanski served a ball into the 18-yard box that defender Rennico Clarke flicked forward to striker Augustine Williams who snapped his header down past Miller and into the back of the net for a tie game at 1-1.

41' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland defender Marco Farfan dribbled down to the end line before cutting a ball back to the top of the arch for Zemanski who launched a hard shot on frame, forcing a diving save from Miller.

55' - GOAL (SEA) - Seattle went up 2-1 in the second half as Zach Mathers converted a penalty kick following a hand ball call in the Portland box.

57' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland's Williams tried to tie it up again when he found himself with space and launched a skipping shot from 30 yards out that Miller went to his left to catch.

84' - CHANCE (POR) - Portland Victor Arboleda, sprung by a nice ball over the top from Zemanski, raced in on goal from the left wing but pushed his shot just wide of the far post.

Portland will return to MLS play Saturday when they travel to take on the Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park (6:30pm PT, ROOT SPORTS).
