For the sixth time in their long history, the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders will square off in the U.S. Open Cup when the teams play Tuesday at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash. (7:30 pm PT, Webstream). Here are five numbers to know for #SEAvPOR in the latest Quick Strikes.
11 Tuesday's match will be the 11th time since the beginning of the 2013 season that the Sounders and Timbers have faced each other in a competitive match and 13th time including preseason friendlies. The rivalry will be the only one in MLS that has seen multiple playoff and U.S. Open Cup matches since the start of 2013.
5Over the past two seasons, the Timbers have a total of five wins in U.S. Open Cup play. In 2014, Portland made a run to the quarterfinals and in 2013, the Timbers went all the way to the seimfinals--the furthest the club has ever progressed in club history.
5 For the fifth straight match when taking on a MLS team in U.S. Open Cup competition, the Timbers will play away from the friendly confines of Providence Park. Portland has had some success in these road matches, twice coming away with victories and averaging two goals per game.
22 The Portland Timbers have played in 22 matches in the U.S. Open Cup in their club history. Portland's debut match in the competition came on June 30, 2004, when the Timbers traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah and beat the Utah Blitzz by a 2-1 margin.
90 Having first played each other in 1975, the match will be the 90th meeting between the Timbers and the Sounders in competitive matches. In addition to what will be six U.S. Open Cup matches, the clubs have matched up in seven playoff games and 67 regular season matches.
