CARSON, Calif. – Playing the first match of a three-game road swing, 10-man T2 fell 3-2 on the road to LA Galaxy II in front of 3,000 fans at the StubHub Track & Field Stadium Saturday night. Timbers Academy forward Gio Calixtro registered his second goal of the season, while midfielder Max Ornstil recorded his third.
T2 (3-21-6, 15pts) opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Timbers Academy midfielder Carlos Anguiano, making his second straight start, fired a shot that was blocked just outside the six-yard box. Calixtro was first to the loose ball and his low shot was tucked away into the lower left corner of the net.
LA Galaxy II (8-18-5, 29pts) equalized to begin the second half, when forward Arielle Lassiter cut in from the left wing, striking his shot past T2 goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh in the 48th minute. After T2 were reduced to 10 men following a red card issued to defender Lamar Batista in the 58th minute, Galaxy II took a 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute. Jack McBean’s left-footed effort from the center of the box just passed the goal line before McIntosh could get to it.
Portland fought back to get the tying goal in the 88th minute when defender Harold Hanson sped past two Galaxy II players down the right wing, delivering a pinpoint pass across the face of goal to Ornstil, who tapped in from inside the six-yard box.
Galaxy II recorded the game-winning goal in stoppage time when defender Jeffrey Payeras struck his shot from the left edge of the box into the bottom far corner of the net in the 94th minute.
Registering five shots in the first half, T2 nearly scored n the 34th minute when Anguiano slid in midfielder Omar Mohamed behind the Galaxy II defense. Latching onto the ball from the right edge of the penalty area, Mohamed’s low shot was pushed aside by goalkeeper Justin vom Steeg. Mohamed’s follow-up shot was cleared off the line by a Galaxy II defender.
Next up, T2 will travel to face San Antonio FC at Toyota Field on Wednesday, Oct. 11; kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (Pacific). The Oct. 11 match, originally scheduled for Aug. 26, was rescheduled due to Hurricane Harvey.
Postgame Quote Sheet
T2 head coach Andrew Gregor
On tonight’s result…
“I thought it was a pretty good first half. We defended well. Galaxy II were a good group tonight. They were a little bit more experienced than they have been in a while with the two first-team guys coming down. I thought the two young boys up top, Gio [Calixtro] and Junior [Carlos Anguiano] were very good. Maybe we should have deserved to enter the half leading 2-0, bu”t we were ahead 1-0. We knew it was going to be difficult in the second half. A couple of moments went against us. We did a good job overcoming the red card situation, getting back into it trailing 2-1 and then to tie it up. Trying to hold onto it late there… We were a little bit unlucky on the corner, but it’s never an easy place to go play at. The guys put in a very honest effort on some very tough variables.”
On the play from Timbers Academy players Gio Calixtro and Carlos Anguiano…
“I thought, especially in the first half, that they played with a lot of freedom. Gio has been around us for a bit and Junior recently played a couple of games with us. I thought both of them in the first half were outstanding. Gio scores the goal off of Junior’s shot. It was nice composure from Gio to take a touch a touch inside the box, create an angle and finish at the near post. I was pleased. Those boys did a real nice job for us tonight. Unfortunately, with how the game went with the red card, we had to make some changes and they had to come off.”
On the next match on the road at San Antonio FC…
“We knew going into this three-game road trip that it was going to be difficult. I don’t expect anything different from the game on Wednesday as far as the effort and how the game is going to go. We’re probably going to have to defend a bit. When you play on the road, that’s going to happen. Try and get as much of the ball we can and when we get opportunities, we need to put it away. San Antonio is up at the top of the table. It’s going to be a difficult game, but it’ll be another opportunity for us to gain experience and look to finish off the season on a positive note.”
