Needing to make up a significant margin in goal differential in order to earn a rematch with Brazil, the U.S. Women’s National Team got four goals from Christen Press and a hat-trick from Carli Lloyd in a 7-0 win over Argentina in the final match of group play at the International Tournament of Brasilia.
Heading into the match the United States had a -1 in goal differential, while China entered Thursday’s matches with a +6 goal differential. The large margin of victory coupled with Brazil’s 4-1 win over China helped send the United States to the championship match and gives them another shot at Brazil for the tournament title.
Thorns FC's Tobin Heath made her third consecutive start, logging 45 minutes on the pitch. Press scored three goals in the first half and added a fourth in the 78th minute. Lloyd registered the second hat-trick of her career, scoring twice in the opening 45 minutes before adding her third just minutes into the second half.
The United States and Brazil meet for the tournament championship on Sunday, Dec. 21; kickoff is set for 1 p.m. (Pacific) and fans can once again follow @ussoccer_wnt on Twitter for updates throughout the match.
