World Cup Notebook | Familiar foes play to a scoreless draw as U.S. remains atop the group

Facing off against Sweden for a fourth straight World Cup, the U.S. Women’s National Team played to a scoreless draw in a battle of top-five ranked teams in the second game of group play.


With the draw, the U.S. sits atop the group with four points, Australia is currently second with three points, while Sweden and Nigeria each have a single point.


The U.S. pushed late looking for the game winner as Thorns FC forward Alex Morgan made her second straight appearance in a match as a substitute, entering in the 78th minute.


There were few chances clear chances in the match for either team with the exception of a late set piece from Sweden in which defender Megan Klingenberg (Houston Dash) did her best Kristine Lilly impression a la the 1999 Women’s World Cup, heading the ball away at the goal line and off the crossbar in the 77th minute.

The U.S. plays it final group match on Tuesday, June 16 against Nigeria at 5 p.m. (Pacific) on FOX. A win or draw will likely send the U.S. through to the knockout rounds.
