World Cup Notebook: Tobin Heath records first career multi-goal game with USWNT in World Cup qualifying tournament

Tobin Heath vs. Guatemala 10.17.14

Thorns FC midfielder Tobin Heath registered her first career multi-goal game for the U.S. Women’s National Team as she started and played all 90 minutes in a 5-0 win against Guatemala on Friday night. Alex Morgan started as well, but was subbed off late in the first half after suffering an ankle injury.

The United States opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Sydney Leroux’s one-touch pass off Ali Krieger’s cross was slotted home by Heath from inside the goal box.

In the 57th minute with her back to the goal Heath redirected Carli Lloyd’s cross with a quick flick of the heel inside the right post for her second goal of the match. Heath now has 11 international goals in 78 matches and three in 2014 for the United States.

With the win, the USWNT moves to the top of Group A with a record of 2-0-0. The United States finishes up group play Monday, Oct. 20 against Haiti, at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Monday’s match kicks off at 4:30 p.m. on FOX Sports 1. The winner and runner-up from each group advance to the semifinals Friday, Oct. 24, at PPL Park in Philadelphia, Penn.

The two finalists and the winner of the third-place match will qualify directly for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. The fourth-place team will enter a two-leg playoff against South American third-place finisher Ecuador for a final berth.
