The Portland Timbers acquired defender Zarek Valentin today in a trade with the Montreal Impact. Here are five things to know about the new player:
-- Valentin was the fourth overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft by Chivas USA.
-- He was a teammate of Timbers midfielder Darlington Nagbe when the pair won the 2010 NCAA College Cup Championship with the University of Akron.
-- Valentin made 55 league appearances with Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt across parts of three seasons from 2013-15, helping the side gain promotion to the Tippeligaen following the 2013 season.
-- Was a member of the Montreal Impact’s MLS inaugural season in 2012.
-- Valentin scored his first career MLS goal on July 8, 2012 for the Impact in their 2-1 win over Columbus Crew SC.
