MATCH RECAP | Portland Timbers 3, LA Galaxy 1

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers, led by goals from Liam Ridgewell, Diego Valeri and Alvas Powell, earned a 3-1 win over the LA Galaxy Sunday at Providence Park in front of a sold out crowd of 21,144. The Portland goals marked Valeri's team-leading 12th of the year, Ridgewell's first in his first game back since returning from injury and Powell's first of the 2017 season.

Match Moments

5' - GOAL (POR) - The Timbers leapt out to an early lead when midfielder David Guzmán curled in a corner kick that flashed across the face of goal to the back post for Liam Ridgewell to head in for a 1-0 Portland lead.

6' - GOAL (LA) - LA tied it up on the ensuing kickoff when Joao Pedro sprung Emmanuel Boateng down the right side. Boateng sped in and slotted home a goal to the far left corner to tie the score at 1-1.

10' - VIDEO REVIEW (LA) - Galaxy forward Gyasi Zardes thought he had scored following an LA free kick and scramble in the box to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. However, in the first use of video review in a Timbers MLS match, Zardes was ruled to have used his hand on the play and the goal was disallowed. Zardes was also subsequently given a yellow card for the play.

24' - CHANCE (POR) - Diego Valeri headed upfield before playing the ball out wide left to Sebastián Blanco. Blanco carried into the box, cut back and curled a shot on frame that Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Rowe saved.

33' - GOAL (POR) - Diego Valeri gave the Timbers a 2-1 lead on a spectacular play in the 33rd minute. Plucking a ball out of the air on a pass from defender Roy Miller, Valeri then spun, took a touch forward and arrowed the ball into the upper left corner of the Galaxy net.

37' - CHANCE (POR) - Midfielder Darlington Nagbe, free down the right channel, hammered a shot on frame that Rowe dove to his left to parry away.

53' - GOAL (POR) - Portland's Alvas Powell nailed home the team's third goal following a nifty backheel in the box from forward Fanendo Adi. Powell received the pass and deposited the ball just inside the far post for a 3-1 Timbers advantage.

90+5' - Deep into second half stoppage time, Timbers goalkeeper Jake Gleeson came up big with a kick save to deny a close-range shot from LA's Ashley Cole.

The Timbers will hit the road next to play Toronto FC on August 12 (3pm PT, ROOT SPORTS).
