PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Timbers forward Jeremy Ebobisse was voted the Major League Soccer Player of the Week for the 16th week of the 2020 MLS season, it was announced today.
Ebobisse tallied his second career brace in the Timbers’ 6-3 win against the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park on Oct. 7, helping the club extend a four-match winning streak. During the 2020 MLS regular season, Ebobisse is tied for the team lead in goals (7) and has registered two assists in 15 appearances (9 starts). Across all competitions for Portland in 2020, Ebobisse is tied for the team-lead with eight goals and has notched three assists in 18 games played (12 starts).
With Portland leading the Galaxy 1-0, Ebobisse tallied his first career direct free kick goal in MLS when he fired a curling effort into the top left corner of the net in the 23rd minute.
The American forward notched his second goal of the night after he was on the receiving end of a precise pass from Eryk Williamson just outside the six-yard box, smashing the ball past LA goalkeeper David Bingham in the 80th minute.
Notably, Ebobisse played in his 72nd consecutive match across all competitions for the Timbers in the match against the Galaxy, tying the club record for the most consecutive matches played across all competitions.
The award marks Ebobisse’s first time winning MLS Player of the Week honors.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
Next up, Portland (8-4-3, 27pts) returns to Providence Park on Sunday, Oct. 11 to square off against the San Jose Earthquakes. Beginning at 7 p.m. (Pacific), the match features a local television broadcast on FOX 12 PLUS (KPTV) with local radio broadcasts on 1029 and 750 The Game (English) and La GranD 1150AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
