PORTLAND, Ore. – T2 today announced that the club and Roy Miller have mutually agreed to terminate the defender’s contract, allowing Miller to rejoin Costa Rican Primera División side Deportivo Saprissa, a club that he played with for two seasons before signing with the Portland Timbers prior to the 2017 season.
“Roy is an incredibly well-respected member of our organization, and we look forward to him hopefully one day returning to the club in a coaching or development role,” said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager and president of soccer for the Timbers. “We are pleased to be able to provide this opportunity for Roy to sign with his former club in his native Costa Rica, and we wish him great success in his return to Saprissa.”
In three seasons in Portland, Miller, 34, made 46 appearances between the Timbers and T2. With the Timbers, Miller appeared in 26 matches (26 starts) during the 2017 and 2018 MLS seasons. A native of San José, Costa Rica, Miller received the Timbers’ Unsung Hero award at the conclusion of the 2017 MLS campaign.
Prior to joining the Timbers, Miller spent two seasons in Costa Rica with Saprissa, making 48 appearances (48 starts) and scoring four goals across all competitions. In 2016, Miller helped Saprissa win its 33rd Primera División Championship, claiming the 2016 Torneo de Invierno title, while making four appearances (4 starts) in the 2016-17 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.
Additionally, Miller made more than 50 appearances for the Costa Rica National Team after making his debut in 2005, winning a Copa Centroamericana title in 2014. Miller has represented Costa Rica during FIFA World Cup qualifying (2006 and 2014) and the Concacaf Gold Cup (2005, 2013 and 2015), scoring two goals as a defender across all competitions.
