Timbers2 fall 3-2 to Real Monarchs in 2025 MLS Next Pro season opener at Providence Park

PORTLAND, Ore. In their 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season opener, Timbers2 fell 3-2 to the Real Monarchs tonight at Providence Park. Portland struck first in the 19th minute with a free-kick goal from Alex Moreno, but the Monarchs answered with three straight goals to take the lead. Timbers Academy player Bryce VanVoorhis cut the deficit in half late in the match, but T2 was unable to complete the comeback.

Timbers Academy Spotlight
Both of T2’s goals tonight were scored by Timbers Academy products. Midfielder Alex Moreno scored T2’s first goal of the campaign off a free kick in the first half. Moreno signed with T2 from the Timbers Academy prior to the start of the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro campaign. A current member of the Timbers Academy, Bryce VanVoorhis tallied Portland’s second goal of the match. VanVoorhis, as well as Timbers Academy products Ricardo Bautista, Kai Carlson, Eric Izoita and Jacob Izoita, all made their professional debuts in the match.

From outside of the box, Alex Moreno curled a T2 free kick up and around the Monarchs’ wall, skimming under the crossbar before it hit the back of the net.

SLC – Aiden Hezarkhani (Omar Marquez), 32nd minute: From the halfway line, Omar Marquez delivered the ball wide for Aiden Hezarkhani, who dribbled to the top of the box and fired a shot into the upper left corner of the goal.
