On Day 5 of Stand Together Week, Portland Timbers and T2 players teamed up to help out at seven events from Portland to Hillsboro to Fairview.
Portland Timbers head coach Caleb Porter brought his family along to the Hillsboro Public Library to kick off the library's Summer Reading program. Joining Porter and his family were defender Zarek Valentin and T2's Seth Casiple and Vilyan Bijev. The group shared their love of reading, led games and activities, and served snacks to an eager crowd of Hillsboro youngsters.
Day 5 was also a day for assisting in the efforts to stamp out hunger in Portland. T2's Akinjide Idowu, Justin Luthy and Dylan Damraoui helped clear pathways, remove invasive weed species, beautify common areas and prepare plots for new gardeners at the Portland Community Gardens, while Timbers rookie Ben Polk helped plant vegetables at the Harrison Park Garden for Outgrowing Hunger. Meanwhile, at the Oregon Food Bank, Timbers defenders Andy Thoma and Taylor Peay sorted through and repacked donated food to help those struggling with food insecurity.
Timbers defender Chris Klute and Amobi Okugo went to Portland's ReBuilding Center to help find usable building materials from area structures destined for demolition. The pair waded through old building materials, pulling nails from lumber to try and get the materials back in construction shape.
At Woodland Elementary School, Timbers players Darren Mattocks and Neco Brett joined Timber Joey to help plant, rebuild, and revitalize the school's garden, an event sponsored by the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization.
Several T2 players also helped out at The Children's Book Bank of Portland, where they spruced up donations of children's book which will later be given to low-income children.
