On a bright sunny fall day in Toronto, Ontario, the Portland Timbers traveled east to take on Eastern Conference foe Toronto FC. Seconds into the game, the Timbers had to make a substitution early with Will Johnson going down with an injury and Ben Zemanski coming in.
But Portland responded well. In the 13th minute, Diego Chara provided excellent pressure upfield to knock the ball away from the Toronto defense. Striker Fanendo Adi pounced on the loose ball, carried in and slotted it to the far post for a Timbers 1-0 lead.
Just three minutes later, the Timbers continued their pressure upfield. Following a Diego Valeri corner kick, Chara collected a loose ball to play back to Valeri. Given space and time, Valeri fired a shot that ricocheted off Toronto's Steven Caldwell for an own goal and a 2-0 Portland lead.
But Toronto pulled one back in the 62nd minute as the Reds' Nick Hagglund headed in a ball to make the score 2-1.
Hagglund then struck again in the 70th minute with another header to pull TFC level at 2-2.
Finally, Toronto FC's Michael Bradley lofted a long free kick in to make it 3-2.
