The Storyline
Austin FC (2nd in West, 4-2-0, 12pts) vs Portland Timbers (6th in West, 3-2-1, 10pts)
The Timbers are riding a three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1) heading into Matchday 7. They have managed to outscore their opponents 7-2 over that stretch, including three goals in each of their last two games. Last Saturday's home victory over Houston was just what the club needed as they're set to face two-straight road challenges in Austin followed by Sporting Kansas City. After the 3-1 win over the Dynamo, defender Kamal Miller was reflective of areas he and the team could develop moving forward, while also praising the improving play the backline has shown in the last two matches.
"I'm a bit upset we couldn't get that clean sheet. We tuned out on that set piece...that can't happen, especially at home," Miller stated postmatch. "But overall, another good performance... We moved the ball well, I thought the backline was good as well."
The backline's recent efforts will have to be on full display Saturday as Los Verdes comes into the match as the Western Conference's second placed team through six games. The two clubs faced-off early in the season, with Austin paying a visit to Providence Park on March 1st in a closely-fought match that would ultimately be decided by David Da Costa's curling free-kick golazo in the dying minutes of the match.
Since that encounter, Austin FC have recorded three wins and one loss, and are currently on a three-game winning streak. They've outscored their opponents 4-1 over that stretch, having four different goalscorers. Saturday's showdown at Q2 Stadium will be the final time these two sides meet in the 2025 regular season. Portland leads the all-time head-to-head series with six wins and just one draw across 10 regular-season meetings.
