PORTLAND, Ore. – Midfielder Yimmi Chara scored a second-half volley and the Portland Timbers defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-0 to go atop the Western Conference with two games to play in the season. Portland goalkeeper Steve Clark made two saves and the Timbers picked up their fifth shutout of the 2020 campaign.
14' - CHANCE (POR) - As the Timbers reset after a corner kick in the Vancouver end, defender Pablo Bonilla went ahead down the right and pinged a pass to the center where center back Larrys Mabiala – still upfield following the corner – spun and volleyed a hard shot on frame that forced a quick save from Vancouver goalkeeper Evan Bush.
45' - SAVE (POR) - On a Vancouver counterattack, Whitecaps strike Fredy Montero came in on goal and chipped a ball over goalkeeper Steve Clark but midfielder Diego Chara swooped into the front of the net to head the ball away.
54' - CHANCE (POR) - Yimmi Chara dribbled in through the left channel, cut the ball back quickly on a 'Caps defender and hit a sharp-angled shot on frame that Bush saved.
61' - GOAL (POR) - Portland took a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute on a beautiful, nine-pass sequence team goal. Starting in their own end with Clark playing the ball out to Mabiala, the team pushed forward crisply moving the ball around the Vancouver 18-yard box. Jorge Villafaña received a pass from Chara on the left before chipping it back to the Colombian who jumped to volley a rifled shot into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
80' - SAVE (POR) - Clark came up with a massive save as a dangerous ball from Vancouver defender Ali Adnan skittered into forward Lucas Cavallini at the penalty spot. Cavallini poked it on goal but the Timbers goalkeeper dove quickly to his left to smother.
