The Portland Timbers (8th, 12-10-7, 43pts) take on fellow Western Conference rivals Real Salt Lake (2nd, 14-7-8, 50pts) in Sandy, Utah at America First Field on Saturday evening. Just three days from their emphatic 4-2 win over first place LA Galaxy on Wednesday, the Timbers are back on the road to battle the no. 2 team in the West in what will be the first of three remaining away matches in the 2024 season.

Saturday's hosts are coming off a much-needed midweek win over FC Dallas. The 3-2 victory catapulted them into second place in the Western Conference following a rough stretch of five losses in eight games (dating back to July 13 and including Leagues Cup 2024). Ecuadorian strike Anderson Julio stepped up for the Claret-and-Cobalt on Wednesday, bagging a brace that in the victory. Head coach Pablo Mastroeni's side are battling to secure a home playoff match, and with the return of starting strike Cristian Arango (17g, 11a), Saturday's match will put offenses under the spotlight.
After losing Andrés Gómez (13g, 9a) over the summer for a transfer move accross the pond, RSL have had the ability to rely on players like Anderson Julio (9g, 2a) and Diego Luna (4g, 12a) to continue providing offensively. Defensively, Brayan Vera (34 clearances) and Justen Glad (31 clearances) have been among the most secure in their own third for RSL. The goalkeeping spot has been one of change all season, with Zac MacMath (17 appearances) and Gavin Beaver (10 appearances) splitting the duties, the latter of the two going full 90 minutes midweek.
