The Storyline

Sporting Kansas City (14th in West, 1-5-1, 4pts) vs Portland Timbers (4th in West, 3-2-2, 11pts)

With 11 points from 7 matches, the Portland Timbers are starting to find their form as they head to the Midwest following a 0-0 draw at Austin in Matchday 7. Defense was the name of the game at Q2 Stadium last Saturday, with Portland's James Pantemis and Finn Surman helping lead the Timbers backline and rallying the club to their third shutout of 2025 by allowing only one shot on goal all night. Surman finished the match with 10 clearances (seven headed), and Pantemis recorded his eighth career shutout in goal for Portland.

Timbers defender Kamal Miller shared his sentiments on the defensive performance on this week's episode of Talk Timbers, stating "If we can keep remaining solid at the back throughout the season, then it's gonna be bright."

The Timbers haven't lost in over a month and will look to extend their current unbeaten streak to five when they face Sporting Kansas City this Sunday.

SKC started the 2025 season on a skid, losing four of their first five matches before parting ways with long-time head coach Peter Vermes and then finding their first win last weekend under interim head coach Kerry Zavagnin. Offensively, forward Dejan Joveljic is SKC's leading scorer with four goals in seven games (six starts). Kansas CIty leads the all-time MLS series against Portland, however the Timbers can even it up with a win on Sunday as they have recorded 8 wins, 9 defeats, and 7 draws in 24 matchups with Sporting.
