PORTLAND, Ore. — Midfielder Angie Kerr today announced her retirement from professional soccer. Kerr retires after playing five professional seasons, including the last two with Thorns FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Kerr, 29, joined Thorns FC as the club’s second-round (16th overall) selection in the 2013 NWSL Supplemental Draft and appeared in 29 regular-season matches (17 starts) in two seasons for Portland. A graduate of the University of Portland, Kerr logged four assists during her time with Thorns FC, while helping lead the club to the inaugural NWSL championship during the 2013 season.
“After all the years of getting to play this beautiful game, it's time for me to move on to the next chapter in my life. There are so many people who have helped and supported me throughout this journey, which I am so thankful for. Soccer has provided me with so many life-long friendships and experiences that I will never forget,” said Kerr.
“I couldn't have asked for a better place to retire, playing in front of the best fans in the world. I want to thank the Thorns organization for the opportunity to play these last two seasons and I look forward to the years ahead watching the women's game continue to grow.”
The San Diego, Calif., native played five professional seasons, spending three years in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) from 2009-11 with St. Louis Athletica (2009), Atlanta Beat (2010) and Sky Blue FC (2011). Kerr was drafted in the third round (15th overall) by St. Louis Athletica in the 2008 WPS General Draft.
“Angie was an instrumental part of the club’s success in its first two seasons. Her professionalism and ability is highly respected amongst coaches, peers and fans alike and we wish her all the best,” said Thorns FC general manager Gavin Wilkinson.
At the international level, Kerr earned 10 caps with the U.S. Women’s National Team (2005, 2008-09) and scored two goals. In 2004, Kerr helped the Women’s U-19 National Team to a third-place finish at the 2004 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cup Championship in Thailand and won the tournament’s Silver Ball as the second most outstanding player and the Bronze Shoe as the third-leading scorer.
A standout for the Pilots, Kerr helped guide the University of Portland to a NCAA title in 2005, recording a goal and two assists in the championship match. Kerr finished her career with 19 goals and 34 assists in 88 games for Portland.
