At halftime at the March 31 match against Real Salt Lake, nine Portland-area nonprofit organizations were recognized by the Portland Timbers as recipients of awards from the Portland Timbers Community Fund (PTCF): The Council for Responsible Sport, Community Cycling Center, Camp Fire Columbia, Open Meadow Alternative School, Mittleman Jewish Community Center, Girls Inc, Miracle Theatre Group, Playworks, and Adelante Mujeres.
A total of $40,000 in grants were awarded to the organizations from the first of three rounds of PTCF grants via a selection of a the PTCF advisory board. Throughout the year, each PTCF advisory board member chooses one organization to highlight based on the connection between his or her company and a nonprofit that aligns well with the company’s focus area of giving. The PTCF board is comprised of representatives from adidas, Alaska Airlines, Burgerville, JELD-WEN Windows and Doors, PGE, and the Timbers.
In the following videos, two advisory board members express their support of two fantastic Portland nonprofit organizations: Girls, Inc, and Open Meadow Alternative School. Jeff Harvey, President and CEO of Burgerville, talks about Girls, Inc, and the Girls Take Off! Wilderness Program. Girls, Inc. of Northwest Oregon inspires girls, ages 8-18, to be strong, smart, and bold. Their gender-specific programs and research-based curricula provide girls with the confidence and self-esteem to access a bright and economically-independent future. Girls, Inc’s PTCF grant will fund the implementation of Girls Take Off! monthly wilderness, active life-style and adventure program.
Bill Hueffner, Director of Development and Professional Relations at JELD-WEN Windows and Doors, highlighted PTCF grant recipient Open Meadow Alternative School. Open Meadow offers an alternative education to youth who were no longer engaged in school and often homeless. Their PTCF grant will enhance the futures of over 200 students at risk of dropping out of school in their alternative school programs by reengaging youth in education and increasing their self esteem.
