Each time a Portland Timbers goalkeeper swats away an opponent's try, veterans of the United States military will receive a little extra thanks for their contribution in service. Oregon-based optics manufacturer Leupold & Stevens will make a donation to the Saves for Soldiers program which helps aid military personnel and their families, for every save made by a Timbers ‘keeper.

Since 2011, Saves for Soldiers has helped donate $75,000 to military families across Oregon. The program acts as a gathering point to donate to several charities that help military families.

“We proudly support the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, especially those who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Rob Morrison, vice president of global marketing for Leupold & Stevens, Inc. “Together, we stand united with the Portland Timbers’ fans and supporters, and promise to never forget these war-fighting heroes and their families.”

The Timbers are happy to be able to pair with Leupold & Stevens on the program, and have saved 342 shots on goal by opponents in their four years in MLS.

“We are extremely proud to partner with Leupold & Stevens on the Saves for Soldiers program,” said Mike Golub, president of business operations for the Timbers. “We are proud that, through this program and our partnership, we can help honor and support those serving our country in the Armed Services.

This season, Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts is second in MLS in save percentage among goalkeepers who have started at least eight games. With a success rate of 75 percent, Ricketts and the Portland Timbers are sure to help bring even more aid to military families in need.
