The Portland Timbers came home on Saturday night after two straight victories against D.C. United and Colorado. New England came into the match as a top Eastern Conference opponent, ranking second-best in the table before the outcome of the match. It was a tough night, with the Timbers attack relentlessly pounding the final third during a blazing hot June evening in Oregon. In the final 10 minutes, it was Fanendo Adi who clinched the match for Portland. Adi first knocked a header into the back of the net on a free kick service from Jorge Villafana. Then, Adi scored again in off a right-to-left assist from Alvas Powell to guarantee the Timbers three points. Adam Kwarasey logged a clean sheet, so it was three slices, three points and three straight wins for the boys in green and gold.
