On The [Playoffs] Hunt
Following their midweek 2-1 victory over Salt Lake, the Timbers remain in the hunt for the playoffs, sitting only four points from ninth place. With eight games evenly split between Providence Park and away remaining, Portland looks to carry the momentum from Wednesday's victory into Lumen Field.
Fight for Cascadia
The Timbers are coming off a 2-1 victory in midweek action against Real Salt Lake and head into this weekend's match still in the race for the Cascadia Cup. Contested by Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, the Timbers currently have a 2-2-1 record through five games in the Cascadia Cup standings. Should Portland win Saturday, they'd be able to capture the supporters' run trophy provided Vancouver Whitecaps FC loses to Seattle in the final match on Oct. 7.
Here are some stats to know ahead of the Timbers final Cascadia Derby matchup of the season:
14
It is the most competitive rivalry in MLS and in 36 all-time MLS regular season matches, the Timbers and Sounders have shared points on only eight occasions. In the 28 matches where there was a victor, neither team has an advantage over the other, splitting the victories with 14 apiece. Either someone takes the lead Saturday, or the rivalry reaches tie no. 9.
4 – Back-To-Back
Santiago Moreno, Felipe Mora, Evander, and Juan David Mosquera have each tallied a goal contribution in back-to-back matches. Additionally, Moreno registered his first goal of the year on Wednesday and became the 15th different player to score for Portland this season. Mora became the fifth player to record multiple goals this season and Mosquera and Evander recorded their fifth and fourth assists, respectively.
503 Invasion
Dating back to August 27, 2017, The Timbers have made the trip up I-5 eight different times to go to battle with the Sounders in Seattle. Portland has bagged points in each of those matches, holding an impressive unbeaten record of 5-0-3 at Lumen Field with a goal differential of +8 and only six goals conceded.
(Out)shooters
In both Portland's 4-1 win over Seattle in mid-April and the scoreless draw in early June, the Timbers have been the more dominant of the two on the offensive side. Across both games, Portland outshot their Seattle counterparts, despite having the ball less. In the 4-1 victory at Providence Park, the Timbers outshot Seattle 17-15 with eight shots on target to the Sounders' five. On June 3, Portland attempted on 11 shots (seven on target) compared to Seattle who only had five shots (three on target).
