Match beneficiaries include environmental nonprofits The Nature Conservancy, Keep Oregon Green
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC today announced that the clubs will host the Green is Gold Charity Match, a mixed-teams scrimmage to benefit the environment, on Wednesday, June 26 at Providence Park. As part of the Timbers’ Green is Gold environmental platform launched in 2024, the match will raise funds and awareness for nonprofits The Nature Conservancy and Keep Oregon Green.
Supported by Intel and TikTok, the event is free to the public with an encouraged donation to the benefitting organizations. Kickoff is set for 7pm PT and will be streamed live on timbers.com. All seating for the event will be general admission and redeemable through SeatGeek with an option to donate while acquiring a ticket. All donations made through the ticketing process will support The Nature Conservancy and Keep Oregon Green’s initiatives.
“One of the proudest moments of my time here was the PTFC for Peace fundraiser we put on for Ukraine in 2022,” said Timbers owner Merritt Paulson. “Players and fans asked that we do it again and I am so pleased we were able to make it happen with the partnership of the Thorns organization to support another amazing cause.”
The Timbers and Thorns FC last hosted a mixed teams charity match at Providence Park on April 27, 2022, in front of 16,921 fans. The match, ‘PTFC for Peace’, raised over $600,000 for UNICEF’s relief efforts in Ukraine.
“Portland Thorns FC look forward to participating in the upcoming Green is Gold match,” said Thorns FC Governor Lisa Bhathal Merage. “Our collective goal is to continue to grow, nourish and invest resources into our community. This match showcases our unique partnership with the Portland Timbers while raising funds for two worthwhile causes.”
Timbers and Thorns captains will host a draft to select players for Team Green and Team Gold with final rosters set to be announced on the website and via the clubs’ social media channels in advance of the 60-minute, full-field match.
In addition to current players, several PTFC legends will also suit up and play in the match. Those players, along with the date of the draft, will be announced in the coming weeks.
Fans in attendance and those watching remotely will have various opportunities to contribute to The Nature Conservancy and Keep Oregon Green’s efforts and can visit Give Online to make donations. Following the event, game-worn jerseys and other items from the Green is Gold Charity Match will be auctioned off online and all proceeds will be donated to the cause.
