SAN ANTONIO – Playing the second match of a three-game road trip, T2 fell 2-1 on the road to San Antonio FC in front of 6,096 fans at Toyota Field Wednesday night.
After falling behind 1-0, T2 (3-22-6, 15pts) equalized in the 38th minute when defender Bill Tuiloma got on the end of midfielder Renzo Zambrano’s delivery from a free kick, heading the ball into the back of the net. The finish marked Tuiloma’s third headed goal of 2017, while Zambrano recorded his first career USL assist in his sixth start of the season.
San Antonio FC (16-4-11, 59pts) tallied the game-winning goal after Ryan Roushandel received forward Ever Guzman’s pass just outside the six-yard box and fired his attempt into the top right corner of the net in the 71st minute.
Down a goal, Portland midfielder Max Ornstil hit a long-range shot that missed the target in the 79th minute. In stoppage time, Tuiloma’s low-curling shot from outside the box forced San Antonio goalkeeper Diego Restrepo into a save at the near post in the 93rd minute.
SAFC scored the opening goal of the match when Guzman headed midfielder Billy Forbes’s cross past a diving Wade Hamilton at the far post in the 14th minute.
Holding an 11-8 shot advantage in the match, Portland threatened early in the first half when Tuiloma’s free-kick attempt from just outside the penalty area was struck over the crossbar in the third minute. Latching onto Zambrano’s pass inside the top of the penalty area, Ornstil’s low shot was fired inches past the far post in the 18th minute. Late in the first half, Russell Cicerone’s left-footed effort from 20-yards out missed the target in the 40th minute, while midfielder Omar Mohamed’s shot from just outside the left edge of the penalty area missed inches past the far post in the 41st minute. Timbers Academy midfielder Carlos Anguiano, making his third-straight start, struck his right-footed effort at Restrepo in the 66th minute.
Next up, T2 will conclude the 2017 USL regular season on the road against Phoenix Rising FC at Phoenix Rising FC Soccer Complex on Saturday; kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (Pacific).
Postgame Quote Sheet
T2 head coach Andrew Gregor
On tonight’s result…
“I thought we started the match well until we made a mistake on a counter from a cross. We didn’t manage it well enough and they punished us. We did a good job of getting into it. Renzo [Zambrano] whipped in a good cross and Bill [Tuiloma] got up to score the goal and had us back in the game. In the second half, I thought we started slow. We gave the ball away in a dangerous area and they punished us for it.”
On Renzo Zambrano’s play this season after recording his first assist of the year…
“I think Renzo has been good when he’s been with us. I still think he’s working himself into sharpness. He’s played a few games with us now, after coming off a big break, and he’s working himself into how we do things, how we like to play, his own sharpness and his own personal fitness, but he’s an experienced player that brings something to our team and really helps us out.”
On heading into the regular-season finale on the road at Phoenix Rising FC…
“It’s the last game of the year. It’s the last chance for the group to impress the staff and the club in the last game. I expect everyone to put in a good effort. The last couple of games, we played well away from home. We’ll have an opportunity to play against Phoenix, which is an experienced team, and have an opportunity to end the season on a positive note and move forward from there.”
