PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers advanced to the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinals as they defeated the LA Galaxy 1-0 in the Round of 16 Friday night at Providence Park in front of a crowd of 14,556. Timbers midfielder Sebastián Blanco scored the lone goal for the victors as they extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games across all competitions.
Portland will play the winner of the June 20, 2018 U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 match between Los Angeles FC and Sacramento Republic FC on a date to be determined.

11' - CHANCE (POR) - Forward Samuel Armenteros, receiving a pass near the edge of the box, beat his man with a nifty stepover and flick to himself. His chipped shot went past goalkeeper David Bingham but was cleared off the line by a Galaxy defender.
13' - CHANCE (POR) - Following a Timbers corner, midfielder Diego Chara corralled a loose ball on the edge of the area. His curling shot on target force a fingertip save from Bingham.
30' - GOAL (POR) - Timbers midfielder Sebastián Blanco got Portland on the board first following some great build up with a team goal. Working the ball at the center circle, Blanco passed the ball to the right sideline for defender Zarek Valentin. As Blanco sprinted ahead, Valentin sent a diagonal ball forward to Fanendo Adi who was cutting across the edge of the 18-yard box. Adi backheeled it to the onrushing Blanco who took a touch, bested his defender, and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner for a 1-0 lead.
45+1 - SAVE (POR) - On a Galaxy corner, the ball was looped back inside the six-yard box over the head of goalkeeper Jeff Attinella. However, defender Larrys Mabiala jumped to head the ball up and over the bar and into safety.
55' - CHANCE (POR) - Armenteros, lurking at the top of the area, took a nice cross from Valentin on his right and fired a shot that skimmed off the top of the cross bar.
89' - SAVE (POR) - Attinella kept the clean sheet alive for Portland as he leapt high to his left to tip away a shot from LA's Ariel Lassiter.
The Timbers return to MLS regular-season play on June 24 on the road against Atlanta United FC (1:30pm PT, FOX). Their U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal match date against the winner of the LAFC-Sacramento is to be determined.
