PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers today announced the addition of Miles Joseph to the club’s coaching staff as an assistant coach.
“We are delighted to add Miles to our coaching staff, and we welcome him and his family to Portland,” said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager and president of soccer for the Timbers. “As someone who has experienced first-hand the growth of MLS from the beginning as a player, and through his considerable experience as a coach in this league, we believe Miles will be an excellent addition to our technical staff.”
Joseph, 44, joins the Portland coaching staff with nine years of MLS coaching experience, most recently serving as an assistant coach with Orlando City SC for parts of three seasons (2016-18). Prior to his arrival in Orlando, Joseph was an assistant coach with New York City FC during the club’s inaugural MLS campaign in 2015. He began his coaching career in MLS with Real Salt Lake, working with the club from 2010-14. During that stretch, Joseph, who holds a USSF “A” license, was part of the coaching staff that helped the club advance to MLS Cup in 2013 and finish runners-up for the 2011 Concacaf Champions League title.
“I am extremely pleased to reunite with someone I have known so well in my playing days, and someone with so much MLS coaching experience,” said Giovanni Savarese, head coach of the Timbers. “We are excited Miles will be part of our coaching staff here in Portland.”

As a player, Joseph was selected in the second round (12th overall) of 1996 MLS College Draft by the MetroStars after four collegiate seasons at Clemson University. Joseph played six seasons in MLS, appearing in 120 matches (67 starts), tallying 11 goals and 21 assists. He played four seasons with the MetroStars (1996-2000) and played his final two seasons in MLS with Columbus Crew SC (2000) and the Dallas Burn (2001).
At the international level, Joseph earned three caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team and was also a member of the U.S. men’s soccer team at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
