The Storyline
Portland (1-2-0, 3pts) returns to Providence Park following their first away match of the 2025 season where they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Nashville SC. Despite the loss, there were positives to note, including goalkeeper James Pantemis' incredible double PK saves in the first-half, making him the second keeper in MLS history to save multiple penalties in a single half (Tony Meola achieved this feat on Aug. 10, 2002). The two PK denials also add to an impressive record for Pantemis in Green and Gold; in three penalty kicks faced, he's saved all three.
Next up for Portland is a duel with the winless LA Galaxy who have lost three-straight – two home, one away – to start their title defense (0-0-3, 0pts). Suffering multiple injuries and participating in multiple competitions, the Galaxy have had a rough few months to begin 2025, but they come into Providence Park fresh off a revitilizing 4-1 Concacaf Champions Cup (CCC) win over C.S. Herediano (Costa Rica) that has propelled them into the quarterfinals of the competition. Head coach Greg Vanney will look to harness some of that CCC-win energy and bring it to Sunday's mattinee in search of their first win of the season.
