PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC midfielder Verónica Boquete was named the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 10 of the 2014 NWSL season, it was announced today.
Boquete, 27, was the catalyst for Portland’s attack on Sunday and was rewarded with a goal in the 78th minute, doubling Thorns FC’s lead after a goal by forward Jessica McDonald in the 11th minute. Boquete received a pass from midfielder Amber Brooks outside the box and, with a quick touch, dribbled around Washington’s defense before firing a right-footed shot low and inside the left post.
The Spain Women’s National Team captain nearly scored in the 70th minute as her shot from inside the box hit off the left post. Boquete finished the match with three shots (2 on goal).
Boquete made her Thorns FC debut June 7 against Western New York after joining the team earlier in the week. She featured on Sunday making her second consecutive start while playing all 90 minutes. Boquete was acquired on April 7, joining the club after her season with Swedish side Tyresö FF.
Thorns FC will return to action Saturday, June 21, at 3:30 p.m. (Pacific) against the Washington Spirit at Maureen Hendricks Field at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
